Evaluation | In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what ways does your media product USE forms and conventions of real media products?

This video displays where in existing texts you can find some on the ideas or themes we used. Although all of the videos may not be specifically from the indie genre a lot of music video conventions are transferable across genres. You will also notice that we haven't copied them exactly, well obviously cause then it wouldn't be our video! But we did note that it's important to draw good ideas from other videos into your own as long as you put your own 'mark' on it so to say. These are all technical codes as it's all about editing, below I have written about how these techniques may be decoded by the audience (because this is what we intended when encoding them)
  • Jump cuts - We used this editing technique to symbolise the passing of time and to represent him drinking his sorrows in a more humorous than serious way
  • Slow motion - This editing technique was put in to make the flow of emotion happier after the believed sadness of the phone call of him expressing his love etc.. and to give the representation of the moment going slow for the girl after realising that her and Ash, the main character, were meant to be together.
  • Use of props - We really like the 'I <3 you' sign that is used in taylor swifts video and wanted to see if we could integrate this into our own work. We also wanted like a common symbol that would be used more than once in the video to create continuity. We also used this as the <3 is symbolic of love and the sign may also create connotations of love letters. This is known as symbolic coding and is used to present the audience with symbols to decode to achieve specific results
  • Slow motion animation - This was used in our video as its becoming an Internet sensation! I personally have been fascinated by stop motion for some time and so always wanted to incorporate it in my work but when 'lyric videos' started to appear online in which lyrics and animations were displayed on screen using a set of stop motion clips I thought we'd be able to use it as well! So because it was becoming popular and is fairly modern we thought it a good idea to include it.
When looking at other videos I thought about how much time can sometimes be shown in as little as 2 minutes. I think this is a great feature of music videos and decided to look into it some more. I found a theory by Bordwell and Thompson that said with moving image there are often 3 different durations; story, plot and screen. In context of our video the screen duration is around 3 minutes, the plot duration could be a weekend or a single day and the story duration will have stretched to however long the couple were going out. This would be quite typical time frames for similar music videos and so this is another way we've kept to conventions.

Another convention that we've kept is the story it's self. Ed Sheeran's song is quite lovey dovey and so the story needed to represent this and not have psycho killers with chainsaws as it just wouldn't fit the genre. Instead we needed to convey a happy story. We obviously didn't do this from the start as that would be silly and the video would be boring and make people want to puke. What we actually decided to do was signify a break up the whole way through until pretty much the last few seconds in which the audience would see the happy ending. One of the main reasons for doing this is because an audience pleasure in music videos is escapism from the real world, this means the audience don't want to be left with tears in their eyes but smiling.

Something that people tend to not think too much about is the actors in the video. An extremely important convention in my eyes is to use quite attractive and desirable actors as, to put it simply, people don't want to watch ugly people. The audience will want to see people in the video that they can relate to but then also that they can aspire to be like. This is especially true with our target audience being around student again as they are influenced significantly by the media and so want respectable role models.

In what ways does your media product DEVELOP forms and conventions of real media products?

We looked into some ideas that may not actually be in music video's but in other moving images and then touched upon in music video's. An example of this is the cross dissolve that we use here..

We couldn't actually find like an exact example of this is any music video's that we had watched BUT we did see simplified versions that we developed on to get this as a result. We used this effect to signify past and present and the transition between them as this technique represents the passing of time. Removing the girl from the shot shows that the boy is now alone and represents their break-up.

Although we used the idea of the slow motion animation in how we used forms and conventions it can also go with the idea that we developed them. This is because you will normally see a video with pure animation or pure narrative/performance, not normally a mixture of the two. We decided to merge the two just to see what it looked like and to see if it worked and we and our audience believe it does. Having the animation between some of the narrative splits the video up and gives its more visual dynamics. We needed something to split up our narrative as we decided not to include any performance in the video and didn't want to bore the audience with pure narrative.

In what ways does you media product CHALLENGE forms and conventions of real media products?

This is a major convention that we went against and we decided to do this because we followed in Ed Sheerans previous ideas. In Ed Sheerans first video 'The A Team' he used complete narrative and only appeared in it himself for about a second. This video was hugely popular gaining views to date. With Ed Sheeran not being in it there is obviously no lip syncing or performance. Although we did challenge this convention we did try to include an aspect of it by having Ash mouth the words for the 'voicemail' on the song. This wasn't meant to mimic lip syncing though and was meant to signify that these were the words he was saying to Claudia.

I tried to think of more ways in which we would have challenged the conventions but then realised why would we have? Although in my opinion challenging conventions is an essential part of music videos or in fact any media texts developing you can't challenge them too much. People like familiarity, they sometimes like to know whats coming, which seems boring but its true. If you're watching a rom com film you want there to be a happy ending cause it's what you expect, you don't want them to both get run over and die. So in this respect challenging say one convention in a video is useful because if no one ever changed anything then everything would just be the same and never modify, but simple changes is what brings about new ideas and variety.

Evaluation Questions

  • In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
  • What have you learned from your audience feedback?
  • How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

The final magazine poster!

We changed our design to this as we wanted all of our designs had more of a running theme. As the poster was meant to be promoting the album we found it necessary to have the album cover featured on here. We came to this conclusion by looking in magazines at advertisements and noticed the constant appearance.

Magazine Poster Alterations

When looking at this again and in conjunction with our Digipak we're not too sure whether it fits the scheme that we were going for. We tried to keep similarites such as the blue in the colour scheme and we also used the same font used in the Digipak but we're not sure as to whether this is a great enough link. Following this we decided to play around with some other things such as using images from our Digipak and ideas from the video to create...

This poster incorporates the images used on the cover and backcover as well as a still taken from the video. We again used the font that we have used throughout the project as well as using the similar blue that we used in the Digipak.

Ideology

What is Ideology?
A system of meanings or ideas that help define and explain the world around us and which an individual or groups holds to be true or important.
Dominant Ideologies
These are ideologies that are repeatedly shown to us by institutions such as the government, the church, education and the media.
Ideologies like these are often what we internalise as normal and begin to not even question. They become our beliefs that we live our day-to-day life around. Dominant ideologies can include ideas about gender roles, the economy and social institutions.
What the hell is this to do with media?!
Any and all media texts retain certain ideas or beliefs that reflect ideologies which we may not always notice. An example might be the stereotypical way that gay men are presented in the media. This idea is slowly changing though as the ideology is changing to make someone that's gay more 'normal' in society.
Media texts are successful in conveying ideologies as they reach a broad audience through many different mediums. Every media text that someone watches that supports or enhances a certain ideology will further imprint that in their beliefs. Although if someones beliefs are strongly against what the media text is represent then their beliefs won't be changed and in fact they may come to resent that piece of media.
So where is the link to my work?
Thinking about controversial ideologies made myself and my partner realise that we will have to convey ideologies that won't stir trouble with our target audience. We have to make sure the way in which we represent gender (as we have both in our video) is equal and shows no inequality as this would be something that our target audience would frown upon. Although this may seem silly as well due to issues with alcohol and binge drinking up and down the country we have to represent that in a normal and accessible way as our target audience will not want to be preached to about things its inevitable that they're doing. We did this by using alcohol in quite a comical way with the beer cans appearing over him whist he stared at facebook. Our protagonist male is also feeling sad at this point, this signifies that he drank like this because he was upset and not in a normal circumstance.

An Updated Draft

We AGAIN found some thing in this one that we want to change just to get it as close to perfect as we can. These things are:
  • Towards the start of the clip there are the lyrics 'I don't drink like everybody else, I do it to forget things about myself'. Originally we planned to have the beer cans jump cut section to appear here but in editing that never worked. We want to actually change this now as when we showed someone they picked up on it and suggested we change it.
  • We also want to put in the voice and words you hear when you leave a voice mail when the main actor begins to speak in his phone
  • The sign that Ash is holding at the ending also needs meaning to be put in it. It is the 'I <3 you' sign that is featured throughout but we got feedback that said we should just be reminded of this at the end. To get around this we will be putting a clip of the sign where you can read what it says in Claudia's flashbacks
  • Feedback also showed us that the lyric section shouldn't move and instead the stills should be still with no ken burns effect on them, when looking at this again we agreed so our next draft will just contain the part being still

UNI - first draft

This is the first draft of Claudia's and mine Music Video. I'm so happy we've finally got a draft together! We have showed a few people though and looked at it ourselves and think theres a few things we need to change:

  • the main thing it the lyrical part of the video has been drawn in this one and we've decided it would look better if it was computer generated. It will look a lot neater and follow the conventions of others.
  • the part of the video that is closest to lip syncing where the main talent is on the phone we also thought needed changing. The last part of this section goes on for too long and we think it will lose the attention of the audience
We want to change these and then that should be our video done! Though I wouldn't be surprised if we make the next one and then decide things need changing on that one too.

Magazine Advert Drafts

Now all these drafts are pretty similar and the only really differences are the colour of words and what is said.

I think the one below is my favourite and probably the one I would chose to submit. I like the simplicity of it and my preference is simply the fact that the caption at the top is in white. I think this just separates it from the title and Ed's name which makes it stand out more. I also like that the crowd provide the background for the writing. As it's a shot of him performing this should draw in attention as people enjoy big events and so seeing a photo of it may trigger memories, therefore linking 'happy' and 'good' ideas with Ed Sheeran and his new album. This photo was one I took myself in Birmingham Ballroom on the 28th October.

Currently..

During the half term me and claudia completed ALL of our filming which I'm so happy about cause it now means we can begin EDITING, which is my favourite part of creating any video!

Lyric Pages

These pages would be replicated with the lyrics from all the songs appearing on the album to create a booklet in the Digipak with all the album's lyrics. This is something we found to appear in nearly every CD we looked at. We used the doodle as the background as we want to make this constant across the Digipak. We used the same font that we've used in all of the different mediums we've created. It's a very close font to Ed Sheerans personally used 'Moms typewriter'. We used quite a low key colour scheme and have tried to stick to a 3-colour scheme as this is something that is used on magazines, posters etc.

Thank you page | digipak

This is an updated version of our 'thank you' page for our Digipak. We changed it from our previous one as we wanted a common background throughout the Digipak that was eye catching and interesting rather than just have solid colour backgrounds. We've also started the colour scheme of the light bluey/green colour as we think this would be quite a typical colour of Ed Sheeran and we wanted to deviate away from the orange colour that he typically uses so not to copy him. We have also used the font that is very similar to Ed's own font and will be a font we use throughout in the video, the whole of the Digipak and the magazine poster.

digipak pictures!

This is a remake of some doodles that Claudia did. We scan in the originals and then created collages like the one above. All of the doodles we decided on by looking at Ed Sheeran's songs and taking out little symbols that represent parts of the song, the explanation of these is below..

- Wings; from the A Team lyric 'it's too cold outside for angels to fly'
- Cup of hot drink; from the Cold Coffee song, quite obviously symbolising the coffee
- The sofa; this is from Ed's song called sofa
- The snowflake; this is a less obvious symbol and is from 'Give Me Love' and the lyric 'maybe you're lovable, maybe you're my snowflake'
- The paw print and plus sign; these were simply taken from Ed's existing ideas as he often uses these symbols himself
- Cat; this is from Ed's video for Drunk as he has a pet cat which features a large part in the video.
- Lego piece; this symbol is taken from the song Lego House

I decided to put this effect on it as I thought it was quite fitting with Ed Sheeran and the colour that it gave the page looked nice.

These two are two possible choices to put on the left inside page of the digipak.

STORYBOARD

This is the storyboard that me and Claudia came up with which depicts the ideas for our video and their order. We came up with the ideas by first having the bigger concept of the video - A boy and girl breaking up because of UNI. We then got the lyrics and started fitting some things around them.

Ed Sheeran - U.N.I lyrics

I found your hairband on my bedroom floor,
The only evidence that you've been here before
And I don't get waves of missing you anymore,
They're more like tsunami tides in my eyes
Never getting dry, so I get high, smoke away the days never sleep with the light on
Weeks pass in the blink of an eye,
And I'm still drunk at the end of the night
I don't drink like everybody else,
I do it to forget things about myself,
Stumble and fall with the head spin I got
My mind's with you but my heart's just not

So am I close to you anymore, if it's over
And there's no chance that we'll work it out

That's why you and I ended over U N I
And I said that's fine, but you're the only one that knows I lied
You and I ended over U N I
And I said that's fine, but you're the only one that knows I lied

Everybody said we'd be together forever but I know that,
I never wanna settle down, come around, break up the love like Lego now,
Never wanna turn into another like you,
Sleep with my thoughts, dance with my views,
Everything's great but not everything's sure,
But you live in your halls and I live in a tour bus,
Now I'm in a position to be another stalker like every thing I say seems to always sound awkward,
Like our last kiss it was perfect, we were nervous,
On the surface,
And I'm always saying everyday that it was worth it,
Pain is only relevant if it still hurts,
I forget like an elephant, or we can use a sedative and go back to the day we fell in love just on our first kiss

So am I close to you anymore, if it's over
And there's no chance that we'll work it out
Ohh you and I ended over U N I
And I said that's fine, but you're the only one that knows I lied
You and I ended over U N I
And I said that's fine, but you're the only one that knows I lied

Wo-ooooahhhh [x2] oohh ohh

Because, if I was gonna go somewhere, I'd be there by now,
And maybe I can let myself down, wo-oahh
And I'm thinking that I'm unaware, I keep my feet on the ground and keep looking around, to make sure I'm not, the only one to feel low,
Because if you want, I'll take you in my arms and keep you sheltered, from all that I've done wrong
And I'll know you'll say, that I'm the only one
But I know god made another one of me to love you better than I ever will

Cause you and I ended over U N I
And I said that's fine, but you're the only one that knows I lied
You and I ended over U N I
And I said that's fine, but you're the only one that knows I lied

recently..

My partner and I have been doing some work on our digipak. We've been brainstorming ideas and creating some first drafts. You can see our draft front and back cover a couple of posts down. We have also been deciding what to put in the middle of our pak by looking at existing examples. We came to the conclusion that we would have a thank you page from Ed Sheeran which you can see the first draft of below. Then a photo of an Ed Sheeran crowd behind the disk. The other two pages will contain a doodle back ground and then the page on the right will have a book of lyrics which will have the song lyrics inside.

Digi-Pak ideas

We created this cover using a picture we found on google but we have changed the image dramatically with editing. This is the kind of cover we want to go for and our final version will probably be an alteration of this.

This is an example of what the back cover would look like, we include things like the barcode, QR code and 'small print' at the bottom as this is what we would need to put if this was going to be a published Album.

PREPARATION

in preparation for mine and Claudias film we decided to have a play around with lip syncing, obviously this isn't an extremely serious video but we just did it for practice and fun and to see how it'd turn out..

Schedule for October!

October
6th - take recce photos
11th/12th - brainstorm ancillary task and begin to design
16th - Sort out photos for the wall, print and cut all of these
18th/19th - continue with ancillary tasks, write tracklisting and get all lyrics sorted.
25th - Organise all filming, set up 'To Do list for the day'
30th - Do all filming/photos for ancillary

Actors | Costumes | Props | Locations

Actors
We will need a boy and girl to play then main two characters. We will also need the girls family, primarily her Mum and Dad. We will also be using extras at the train station for the crowd that the girl gets lost in.
The main girl will be played by my partner Claudia and the girls family will be played by her parents.
The main boy will hopefully be played by our friend Ash though this needs to be confirmed with him as we need to make sure he has enough free time.
Costumes
As our video is set in the normal time we won't need any specific costumes to signify the time genre etc.. We will need a two change of clothes for each of the main actors though as there's two flashbacks and the present time, the change of clothes in this circumstance will help to tell that the clips are flashbacks. The clothes will be the actors own and will be common of this time era.
Props
  • Laptop
  • Wall with MANY photos of the main girl(claudia)/couple
  • 2 Phones
  • Suitcase + clothes
  • Beer cans
  • Hairband
  • Guitar, notepad + pan
  • Car x2
  • Flowers, dead and alive
Locations
We will need quite a few locations as we will be switching between places, the locations we are going to use are;
  • A Boy's bedroom
  • A Girl's bedroom
  • Kettering train station
  • Car
  • Isham street
  • Isham field
All of these things were decided when we created our storyboard as they were things we had to consider when planning out the shots.

Examples of digipaks

These are some examples of digipaks for quite recent artists like our own. Common conventions of digipaks are photos of the artist or variations of the cover art, track listing, lyrics, comments from the artist and sometimes DVD's or links to websites with more information.

Story Board

For the past couple of days myself and my partner Claudia have been discussing and designing a story board. Though story board is a loose term as neither of us really prefer to use this method so instead we printed the lyrics to the song and annotated all the sections and what we planned to do with them. We have also noted the types of camera shots that will accompany them.

Ed Sheeran's director

Emil Nava is a successful music video director who has directed two of Ed Sheerans videos and all of Jesse J's music videos to date. At school he knew he loved music and drama but only discovered his true talent when he picked up a video camera. He's worked his way up through lots of hard work and determination to become one of today's most sort after directors. We look to take some of his concepts used and convey them in our own way in our final video.

Genre | Representations | Narrative

Genre
The Indie genre - this was decided when we chose are song as its the genre of the song. Indie pop is the genre we will be concentrating on and is a branch of alternative rock music that originated in the UK in the mid-1980s. The term 'Indie' has been used for some time to describe artists that are on independent labels and/or the labels themselves. It has now branch from a genre into a lifestyle and many people strive to be Indie.

Representations
Our video should be quite mellow and should be applicable to all our target audience. The Talent that we will use will be people that the audience can relate to and won't be like front cover models. Saying that we will try to make the talent attractive as this is something that the audience look for and would prefer to see. We will convey positive representations as otherwise we could offend viewers.

Narrative
We want to try to portray a story of a boy and girl being together and then not. We will try to use montages of images of them then and now, not necessarily creating continuity but instead displaying the difference of feelings.

Digital Technology

When creating our video me and Claudia are going to have to use a lot of different technology. Firstly and most obviously, we are using blogger. This is an effective way to present our work and means that we can access it almost wherever we are and not just at school.

Once we begin to film we will be using video camera's from our schools resources. The most likely camera we will use will be a Panasonic HC-V500 which is a handheld or mountable HD camera that records movement and still shots.
After all our filming is done we will upload it to apple macs at school and begin editing it on Final Cut Pro which is an industry standard editing program.
As mention above we use apple macs which is what most of our work is done on although we would sometimes use home computers or mobiles if we wanted to do some work outside of school.

AUDIENCE - sagel

Socio-economic group - students, quite typically average waged with a large friendship web
Age - around 14 to 25
Gender - both males & females
Ethnicity - mainly white Caucasian as this will mostly be who's in the video
Lifestyle - out-going, fun people. May have part-time jobs, and will most probably be full-time students who are interested in music more specifically indie music. They will spend a certain amount of time online or watching the TV which would be where the saw the video
We've chose this audience as they are the kind of people that would be interested in the genre of music we're doing and therefore he kind of people that would want to watch the video.

The kind of people we would expect to watch our video could look like this...

...though they would probably look a lot less photoshopped!

Conventions of Music Videos

In order to make our video as realistic as possible we will try to take teh conventions from the videos we have studied and use them in our own way. When looking at conventions they seem to be quite particular to the genre.
The indie genre is mostly a mixture of narrative and performance. Sometimes the whole band will be performing and other times it will only be individual members. The band will be wearing quite casual comfy clothes and not extravagent outfits like those that can be found in many pop/dance videos.
The tone of the video changes depending on the lyrics and tempo of the song. It can be bright, fast, dark, slow, etc.
The video is edited quite simply normally in general time to the music. The clips themselves will sometimes be edited with different themes, for example black and white or sepia. Special effects can be used but aren't an extremely common thing.
The narrative is typically symbollic and will match the meaning or general jist of the song. Although sometimes it was have no relevance at all.
These are the kind of ideas that we will be using and developing on when creating our video. We'd already discussed that we were going to use a mixture of narrative and performance and luckily this idea was supported by the research we found.
We also looked at some pre-existing videos from Ed Sheeran and found that his are much more narrative than performance and some of his videos he doesn't even appear in. This is obviously unconventional but has given us some new ideas to consider.

Director? Colourist? Producer? HUH?!

When researching the Directors of the videos I noticed some other job titles that are used in the video production industry, a lot of which I didn't really know the meaning of. This lead me to look into this further and below are some short definitions of the job titles:

Director - A person who is in charge of an activity, department or organisation
Producer - A person that makes or causes something
Director of photography - A person photographing with a motion picture camera
Production designer - The person in charge of the overall look of a filmed event
Editor - A person who is in charge of and determines the final content of a text
Colourist - A person that ensures all shots within each scene match each other by balancing colour saturation and illumination from shot to shot

Good Time - Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen

For the last textual analysis of an existing text I decided to go for quite a new, popular song. I looked into the background of this sing and found that the director also directed one of my newest favourite vides, Taylor Swift - We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, this lead me to think that this directors taste was very good.

Director: Declan Whitebloom
Declan was born and raised in London and was brought up with a family that were obsessed with film. He went on set a lot with his older brother and this is where he picked up the process. After earning his BA he hopped on a plane to LA to realise his dream and after spending many years in different aspects of the job, which included many years in editing, he got behind the camera and that's where he's stayed. From there he's directed videos for Owl City, Taylor Swift, Olly Murs and many others.

TEXTUAL ANALYSIS
  • The idea of the video is quite simple. Its a big group of friends meeting up for a camping trip
  • The video begins with Carly and her friends and Adam and his friends driving along in separate cars, we see them singing along to the song which you could assume was playing on the radio
  • Both cars then pull up in front of a 'woodsy' cabin and we see shots of the two singers both narratively and then lip syncing
  • We then see the group walking into the woods and setting up camp. The evening comes around and so the shots are darker but they use light from a fire to be able to see.
  • The group are then dancing around the fire with the two artists still occaionally singing
  • Everyone is dressed in summery fashionable clothes, this portrays them as role models and allows the audience to both idolise them but also connect with them through similarities
  • The cars used are quite 'indie' and 'cool' cars, the roofless one is something that seems to make an appearance in a lot of indie pop videos

Keeping On Without You - This Providence

I decided to analyse this video as well as it is quite a mellow indie sing like the one we have chose to do and so I wanted to look for similarities and conventions in these videos. I also think they are both quite good videos and have some ideas in that Claudia and I would be able to transfer into our own videos.

Directed by: Luga Podesta
Production company: London Ally Entertainment
Producer: Christian Heuer
Executive producer: Luga Podesta
Director of Photography: Tom Banks
Production designer: Sarah Lauson
Editor: Luga Podesta
Colourist: Lauren White
Label: Fueled by Raymen
Release date: November 10, 2009

TEXTUAL ANALYSIS
  • This video is set in two main places; a sandy wasteland and an abandoned destroyed house
  • During the video there are a lot of close ups of things such as a photo, feet hanging down, a clock, quite random things but then all things that add to the story of the song
  • Quite a narrative video as you can tell the meaning that the girl has to the band members both through the song and the images on screen
  • You see a lot of shots of the main singer lip syncing to the song, but this isn't too frequent and is interspersed with shots of other band members and landscape shots
  • The timing of the day also progresses throughout the song in that its like early afternoon/morning when it starts and by the time it finishes its around dawn
  • The broken down house really relates to the lyrics of the song as it seems that it symbolises the broken down relationship

Tonight Tonight - Hot Chelle Rae

Directed by: Luga Podesta
Production company: London Alley Entertainment
Producer: Christian Heuer
Executive producer: Luga Podesta
Director of photography: Rob Witt
Production designer: Phillip Boutte Jr.
Editor: Luga Podesta
Director's rep: Yell Productions
Colourist: Bob Curreri
Label: Jive
Release date: April 26, 2011

TEXTUAL ANALYSIS

  • Uses montages of images from all scenes. The office and garden party are shown at the beginning of the video and then as the song progresses the band and party begin to be shown.
  • The video is fun and the pace of the video is fairly relentless. The video uses lots of bright colours and high key lighting. This all matches the feel of the song.
  • Whilst the narrative parts of the video are showing the band will occasionally sing lines but you don't see them singing the whole song. This is because this may become too repetitive, even with a change of location
  • On the roof you see the whole band with all of their instruments playing the song. Its fairly dark and the atmosphere is very much party-like
  • The band all have similar way of dressing, this helps to signify that they're all quite similar and marks them more together as a band

Research Methods

Primary research involves the collection of data that doesn't already exist.
Secondary research involves the summary and collection of existing research.
Qualitative research is that which involves words or a persons personal response.
Quantitative research is research that can be measured and evaluated to show trends or patterns.

In order to collect both a substantial and useful amount of data I will have to use a mixture of all of these methods. Each has its advantages and disadvantages when looking for different things.

Primary research can be useful when wanting to gather opinions or new information. A more typical method that is primary is a questionnaire, this allows you to collect whatever data you need, it will also be unique to you as no one else will have it for obvious reasons.
Secondary research is most probably the easiest research to get, it can be found on the Internet or in books and is anything that is readily available. It can be useful to find out things that you wouldn't really be able to find out yourself, such as specific information on celebrities or companies.
I will need both Qualitative and Quantitative data as they both have different uses. You will need qualitative data to find out information such as backgroud information. Quantitative data will be needed when looking at, as said above tends or patterns, such as viewing figures on videos.

History of Music Videos

A Music Video is a short film or visual clip that accompanies a song or piece of music. More recent videos are used as promotional gimmicks and to enhance the enjoyment of the listener.
This first music videos were released in the 1950's but even as early as the 1920's animated videos were accompanied by musical pieces labelled 'visual music'. For example the early items from Walt Disney such as Fantasia were based soley around music.
Through the years videos have obviously changed a huge amount, in the beginning it was largely just simple videos of the artists singing with some variety. Nowadays there are many types of video such as narrative, lyrical or performance. The genre that our chosen song is from more typically has a narrative mixed with performance video. These are known as hybrid versions and many examples of these can be found on youtube like the couple below..
Love Drunk - Boys Like Girls
Tonight Tonight - Hot Chelle Rae
Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen

A2 Brief

"A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:
  • a website homepage for the band
  • a digipak for the album's release
  • a magazine advertisement for the digipak
I have chosen this as my brief and will be working with Claudia. The song that we have chosen to do is 'UNI' by Ed Sheeran. My two ancillary will most probably be the digipak and the magazine advertisement.

digipak: a digipak is a fairly recent type of packaging for CD's, its typically made of a heavy cardboard material and will normally open like a book or be in three parts with one opening to the left, another to the right and the CD in the middle in the more traditional 'jewel CD case' stuck onto the card background. They are most frequently used for special edition releases and allow for more information, including lyrics or information on the band and more graphic display.

What have I learnt about...

Scripting
Me and my partner decided to make a storyboard as opposed to writing a script. Though we saw through what other people were doing and from what we were told that when writing a script you have to include all details including any speech or directions.
Storyboarding
When we first started we spent about 20 minites on the first picture but we learnt that the pictures don't have to be perfect and simply need to be a rough idea of what kind of shots you plan to use. You may also want to include some writing under the photo to describe whats happening in the picture or the speech needed or the location you plan to use.
Locations
That takes us nicely on to what I learnt about Locations. We found that we seem to have a lot of ideas that would take place in amazing, unique locations then we would realise that we have no access what so ever to locations like that, so we'd have to rethink.
Talent
This means the actors that are going to be in the film. We found that a lot of people in our school are camera shy (much to our surprise as there are millions of photos of them online!) but anyway, we found it difficult to get people we wanted. When we finally did find some people to cooperate we found that it's not as simple as sticking them in front of a camera and ta-da. Instead it takes a lot of different takes, from different angles with different techniques.
Organisation
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT. For example we tried to film one day just randomly, but we didn't have the right props or people around. Then if we filmed a little one day we found out we couldn't use it cause the actors were wearing different clothes the next time we would try. So we organised everything for one day and made sure everything we planned and possible for that day.
Teamwork
This was something to worry about as I've found in the past that it can sometimes be difficult to rely on people. Luckily, my partener Claudia was very responsible and easy to rely on though less can be said for some other partners in our group.. Being in a pairing made things easier on both of us as well and we found it less challenging to come up with ideas as there was two of us doing it.
Editing
This was one of the funniest parts of the project although I didn't seem to learn much as I had already done a lot of this in previous years for other projects and lessons.

Tropes Of Music Videos

Different Types Of Music Videos

  • Narrative
  • Montage
  • Cartoon
  • Performance
  • Lip Sync
  • One Cut Video
  • Artist Absent
  • Random
  • Intertextuality
My favourite music genre is Indie and so I decided to look at the tropes for the videos of this genre. I did this by watching Mumford and Sons - 'The Cave'. The tropes that I decided on were;
  • Artistic
  • Pretty locations
  • High Production Value
  • Calm
  • Relaxing
  • No sexism
  • Seems Spontaneous
Videos like this, that are quite weird but just fit the song, I really like. The concept is simple but the way it's displayed is clever and tasteful making the video a very good one!

Comparison of Tell Him and What Makes You Beautiful

Some music video conventions have been kept in both videos such as shots of the singer mixed with shots of the whole group. The mixture of locations has also been kept throughout both although there are a lot more in the newer video due to higher production costs.
In the newer video the singers are also a lot more image conscious which can be seen by how the artists conduct themselves. The increased production costs also show due to better and slicker editing.
The film quality is also a lot better along with more mobile camera work. This again is available due to high production costs.

Textual Analysis of 'Roses are Red' - Dean Atkinson

Roses are Red is a short film published on vimeo by Dean Atkinson. The film uses a variety of effects to convey it's message in a short time as this is something short films have to do. Some interesing shots used are the angled and long shots when the main character is taking photos. The crew selected a very dynamic setting for this filming which creates really good effects and makes good use of the location. The abstract of the building could be seen to reflect the obscure world he was in.
Another good shot in the close up of the rose that is paired together with an editing technique of a blur. This we thought reflected the welling up of tears in the characters eyes whilst looking at the flower as it obviously trigger memories.
An over the shoulder shot of the main characters computer screen when he is looking a his photos makes you feel as though your prying in his business. The common etiquite that pearing over someones shoulder is rude can be felt in this scene and does reflect the fact he wouldn't want anyone else in his business.
Thoughout the exract non-diegetic music is edited on. The continous repeatition of a minor key piano peice automatically adds sorrow and heartache to the film. Being a short film the music is very important as it is hard to convey a feeling through dialogue in that short a time but the music easily creates the mood the director intended.
Other sound in the extract includes a non-diegetic voce over. The voice is that of the main character and both times we hear it he says 'a pictures worth a thousand words' which is a theme in the film as he believes to have captured a picture of his dead girlfriend which turns out to be obviously wrong. This picture maybe reinforcing to him again that the girl is gone and also linking to the photo he retrieves from a broken frame in his room.
Another thing that must be really consider when making a short film is the mise en scene. You notice that the main character who we find out seems to be mourning a death is dressed in dark, dull clothes. This reinenforces his sorrow and state of mourning.
A prop used in the film is a red rose, this links to the title of the film and also the reason for the protagnists sorrow as the girl that was killed was called rose. The red of the flower can be also linked to death as red is commonly linked with danger and blood but also with love with is another running theme in the film. This is also an emotion linked with roses.
There are no really noticable cuts in the film as there are no dramatic scenes and I believe the director is trying to create a sense of realism by using real locations and quite tame filming.

After looking at this short film and others I do really like them and think the concept of them is really good but my knowledge in them due to a lack of exposure is limited. In this circumstance I'm leaning towards doing a Music Video as my main task. Despite this I have looked at some short films and my favourite I've put below. I really like this as I think it's so clever and makes you think. Things like this really appeal to me.
