A Music Video is a short film or visual clip that accompanies a song or piece of music. More recent videos are used as promotional gimmicks and to enhance the enjoyment of the listener.
This first music videos were released in the 1950's but even as early as the 1920's animated videos were accompanied by musical pieces labelled 'visual music'. For example the early items from Walt Disney such as Fantasia were based soley around music.
Through the years videos have obviously changed a huge amount, in the beginning it was largely just simple videos of the artists singing with some variety. Nowadays there are many types of video such as narrative, lyrical or performance. The genre that our chosen song is from more typically has a narrative mixed with performance video. These are known as hybrid versions and many examples of these can be found on youtube like the couple below..

A2 Brief
"A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:
digipak: a digipak is a fairly recent type of packaging for CD's, its typically made of a heavy cardboard material and will normally open like a book or be in three parts with one opening to the left, another to the right and the CD in the middle in the more traditional 'jewel CD case' stuck onto the card background. They are most frequently used for special edition releases and allow for more information, including lyrics or information on the band and more graphic display.

What have I learnt about...
Scripting
Me and my partner decided to make a storyboard as opposed to writing a script. Though we saw through what other people were doing and from what we were told that when writing a script you have to include all details including any speech or directions.
Storyboarding
When we first started we spent about 20 minites on the first picture but we learnt that the pictures don't have to be perfect and simply need to be a rough idea of what kind of shots you plan to use. You may also want to include some writing under the photo to describe whats happening in the picture or the speech needed or the location you plan to use.
Locations
That takes us nicely on to what I learnt about Locations. We found that we seem to have a lot of ideas that would take place in amazing, unique locations then we would realise that we have no access what so ever to locations like that, so we'd have to rethink.
Talent
This means the actors that are going to be in the film. We found that a lot of people in our school are camera shy (much to our surprise as there are millions of photos of them online!) but anyway, we found it difficult to get people we wanted. When we finally did find some people to cooperate we found that it's not as simple as sticking them in front of a camera and ta-da. Instead it takes a lot of different takes, from different angles with different techniques.
Organisation
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT. For example we tried to film one day just randomly, but we didn't have the right props or people around. Then if we filmed a little one day we found out we couldn't use it cause the actors were wearing different clothes the next time we would try. So we organised everything for one day and made sure everything we planned and possible for that day.
Teamwork
This was something to worry about as I've found in the past that it can sometimes be difficult to rely on people. Luckily, my partener Claudia was very responsible and easy to rely on though less can be said for some other partners in our group.. Being in a pairing made things easier on both of us as well and we found it less challenging to come up with ideas as there was two of us doing it.

This was one of the funniest parts of the project although I didn't seem to learn much as I had already done a lot of this in previous years for other projects and lessons.

Tropes Of Music Videos

My favourite music genre is Indie and so I decided to look at the tropes for the videos of this genre. I did this by watching Mumford and Sons - 'The Cave'. The tropes that I decided on were;
- Artistic
- Pretty locations
- High Production Value
- Calm
- Relaxing
- No sexism
- Seems Spontaneous
Videos like this, that are quite weird but just fit the song, I really like. The concept is simple but the way it's displayed is clever and tasteful making the video a very good one!

Comparison of Tell Him and What Makes You Beautiful
Some music video conventions have been kept in both videos such as shots of the singer mixed with shots of the whole group. The mixture of locations has also been kept throughout both although there are a lot more in the newer video due to higher production costs.
In the newer video the singers are also a lot more image conscious which can be seen by how the artists conduct themselves. The increased production costs also show due to better and slicker editing.
The film quality is also a lot better along with more mobile camera work. This again is available due to high production costs.

Textual Analysis of 'Roses are Red' - Dean Atkinson
Roses are Red is a short film published on vimeo by Dean Atkinson. The film uses a variety of effects to convey it's message in a short time as this is something short films have to do. Some interesing shots used are the angled and long shots when the main character is taking photos. The crew selected a very dynamic setting for this filming which creates really good effects and makes good use of the location. The abstract of the building could be seen to reflect the obscure world he was in.
Another good shot in the close up of the rose that is paired together with an editing technique of a blur. This we thought reflected the welling up of tears in the characters eyes whilst looking at the flower as it obviously trigger memories.
An over the shoulder shot of the main characters computer screen when he is looking a his photos makes you feel as though your prying in his business. The common etiquite that pearing over someones shoulder is rude can be felt in this scene and does reflect the fact he wouldn't want anyone else in his business.
Thoughout the exract non-diegetic music is edited on. The continous repeatition of a minor key piano peice automatically adds sorrow and heartache to the film. Being a short film the music is very important as it is hard to convey a feeling through dialogue in that short a time but the music easily creates the mood the director intended.
Other sound in the extract includes a non-diegetic voce over. The voice is that of the main character and both times we hear it he says 'a pictures worth a thousand words' which is a theme in the film as he believes to have captured a picture of his dead girlfriend which turns out to be obviously wrong. This picture maybe reinforcing to him again that the girl is gone and also linking to the photo he retrieves from a broken frame in his room.
Another thing that must be really consider when making a short film is the mise en scene. You notice that the main character who we find out seems to be mourning a death is dressed in dark, dull clothes. This reinenforces his sorrow and state of mourning.
A prop used in the film is a red rose, this links to the title of the film and also the reason for the protagnists sorrow as the girl that was killed was called rose. The red of the flower can be also linked to death as red is commonly linked with danger and blood but also with love with is another running theme in the film. This is also an emotion linked with roses.
There are no really noticable cuts in the film as there are no dramatic scenes and I believe the director is trying to create a sense of realism by using real locations and quite tame filming.
After looking at this short film and others I do really like them and think the concept of them is really good but my knowledge in them due to a lack of exposure is limited. In this circumstance I'm leaning towards doing a Music Video as my main task. Despite this I have looked at some short films and my favourite I've put below. I really like this as I think it's so clever and makes you think. Things like this really appeal to me.
